Program & Curriculum
Model Office
At the center of the training program is the Family Medicine Residency Clinic. This state-of-the-art, 24,000 square-foot facility serves as the headquarters for our resident physicians and includes 16 exam rooms and a dedicated procedure room; medical records, laboratory and radiology services; spacious resident team offices; a beautiful library and conference room; and other administrative offices.
The FMR Clinic offers minor surgical care, cryosurgery, OB ultrasonography, colposcopy including biopsy and LEEP, laboratory evaluation and radiographic imaging.
The clinic is also home to several other health care specialists who provide additional educational support for our residents. This includes a registered dietitian, doctor of pharmacology, clinical psychologist, and board-certified endocrinologist. Residents are also scheduled on a rotating basis for specialty clinics at the FMR Clinic including infectious disease and osteopathic manipulation techniques (for D.O. residents). These are staffed by community attendings.
Residents provide comprehensive care for their panel of patients with outpatient clinic time increasing over the three years of residency training. Each week PGY-1 residents are scheduled for 1-2 half days per week of clinic, 2-3 half days during PGY-2, and 4 half days per week during PGY-3.
Team Care
To simulate group practice, the residents, faculty physicians and clinic staff are organized in a team structure to share patient care, educational meetings and staff meetings. Teams provide continuity of care to their assigned patient panel and this fosters a cooperative atmosphere among its members.
Noon Conferences
Didactic and case presentation conferences are integrated into the educational experience and are a very important part of the residents' overall training. A comprehensive conference schedule has been developed and is coordinated by the Chief Residents. Generally, noon conferences are scheduled 4 times per week (Monday through Thursdays) at the FMR Clinic with meals provided.
Research
Ongoing clinical research is conducted by fulltime Faculty members. Residents contribute to current projects or work to develop and implement new ones. Residents may also contribute to the body of medical knowledge by conducting an extensive literature review and preparing a review article for submission for publication.
Call
Overnight call is shared by the senior (PGY-2 and PGY-3) residents. These residents are scheduled for two half-month blocks of night float each year. Weekend call is shared by all residents. The weekend team includes two PGY-1 and two senior residents. There is a faculty physician who rounds daily and is available as backup for all on-call issues. The on-call faculty staffs all procedures, OB deliveries, hospital admissions and is available for other issues upon resident request.
Curriculum
The curriculum has been designed to provide residents with the training needed for a rewarding, diversified career in Family Medicine, often in a rural setting. The training fully complies with regulations set forth by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), Residency Review Committee for Family Medicine (RRC-FM), and American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM).
Please note the current curriculum includes a rural training month in Year 2. Off-site rotations are also required in Year 1 for inpatient pediatrics at the University of Utah, Salt Lake City and in Year 2 for inpatient pediatrics at Children's Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota - Minneapolis Campus. Housing is provided for all mandatory out-of-town rotations. A rotation stipend is paid for all out-of-town rotations whether mandatory or elective.
