October Best Month for Flu Shots

Almost everywhere you look there are advertisements urging you to get a flu shot right now. Regional Health recommends waiting just a little longer for the annual vaccination. "It's been feeling like fall outside and people know the flu season is right around the corner. Regional Health encourages patients and staff to wait until October to receive the influenza vaccination," says Robert Houser, M.D., Rapid City Regional Hospital Vice President of Medical Affairs. "Our influenza season in this area usually peaks in January. Waiting until October for the vaccination helps make sure your immune response is at its best when influenza season is at its worst."

Severe Respiratory Illness Prompts Regional Health to Implement Hospital Visitation Guidelines to Protect Patients & Public

Due to an increase of severe respiratory illness in the Black Hills, particularly in young children 18 years and younger, Regional Health is implementing visitation guidelines to protect the safety and health of its patients and the public. Visitation guidelines are now in effect at all Regional Hospitals located in Custer, Lead-Deadwood, Rapid City (including the Regional Rehabilitation Institute), Spearfish and Sturgis. If visiting a Regional Health clinic, visitors will be asked to wear a mask if symptomatic.

While building renovations continue at Spearfish Regional Hospital (SPRH), the SPRH Gift Shop, operated by the SPRH Auxiliary, will temporarily close at 4 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 10. The Gift Shop plans to reopen as soon as space is available. Before the temporary closing, the Auxiliary will have a storewide sale of 40 percent off on all items from Sept. 29 through Oct. 10.

These symptoms can result from carrying too much weight or incorrectly wearing a backpack. Kim York, Assistant Director of Occupational Therapy at the Regional Rehabilitation Institute, in Rapid City, S.D., says now that school has started it's time to consider how much weight students are carrying in their backpacks.

Send Back Pain Flying - Physical Therapy Can Help Alleviate Back Pain

Unfortunately most of us will experience back pain at some point in our lives. Back pain can greatly impact daily movement, work and recreational activities. There is good news for those who suffer from back pain, however. According to the National Institutes of Health, most back pain can be treated without surgery. Kelly Bruhn, a physical therapist with the Regional Rehabilitation Institute, in Rapid City, S.D., has worked with many back pain patients who are now pain-free or have reduced pain. She says a key to back pain relief is seeking treatment when pain begins. Early treatment can also hopefully help avoid the need for surgery, especially for acute lower back pain.

The Regional Health Heart and Vascular program was recognized Wednesday, Aug. 13, for excellence in quality care with two national awards. These awards include the Platinum award for the ACTION Registry from the American College of Cardiology, which is the highest award achievable for measuring performance for heart attack patients, and a Silver Award for outcomes in the Mission: Lifeline Project. Mission: Lifeline is a national program sponsored by the American Heart Association (AHA) focusing on the care of heart attack patients with a complete blockage of a blood vessel or artery.
