Thomlison Honored with Rapid City Regional Hospital's DAISY Award for Nurses

Stacy Thomlison, RN, received the February DAISY Award for extraordinary nurses at Rapid City Regional Hospital. She has been a registered nurse (RN) with Regional Health since 2013, working in the Regional Cancer Care Institute. Thomlison was nominated for the DAISY Award by both a patient and his wife. "Stacy has got what it takes in every area of her entire being to be a perfect nurse in her department," said the patient's wife.

New X-ray Digitizer Enhances Buffalo Regional Medical Clinic Patient Care

Late in January, Regional Health equipped Buffalo Regional Medical Clinic with an X-ray digitizer. The digitizer makes it possible to take X-rays on film, download the image on a computer, and send the image directly to a radiologist for review. Angie Leonard, Buffalo Regional Medical Clinic Administrator, said the digitizer represents a commitment to the clinic but also a commitment to the community. Now, she said, an X-ray can be read on the same day it was taken which can greatly improve patient care.

During a special event at Rapid City Regional Hospital (RCRH) March 12, hospital representatives received a federal, gold award Susan Gunderson, LifeSource CEO and founder, of Minneapolis, Minn., made a special trip to Rapid City to present the Gold Recognition National Hospital Organ Donation Campaign Award to RCRH President Mick Gibbs and staff. The award, a component of Workplace Partnership for Life, is from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Health Resource and Services Administration (HRSA), Healthcare Systems Bureau, Division of Transplantation.

Dr. Keegan will lead a panel of caregivers and speak about public health threats from the 1918 Influenza to Ebola. Other presenters and subjects will include Angela Anderson, M.D., talking about the importance of childhood immunizations, and Veronica Lesselyoung, speaking about the battle against antibiotic resistant bacteria. Recognition of Heart Attack Risk Factors & Signs Important in Saving Lives

Heart disease is the number one cause of death in the United States, killing more than 375,000 people a year, according to the latest American Heart Association reports. "Heart attacks occur when blood supply to a part of the heart is interrupted, causing scarring and death of heart tissue. The most common cause is atherosclerosis, which is a fatty buildup of cholesterol and fibrous tissue of plaque in the arterial wall," says Drew Purdy, M.D., Fellow in the American College of Cardiology, of Regional Heart Doctors in Rapid City, South Dakota. "When the plaque tissue becomes unstable and ruptures it can lead to a blood clot, which can cause a heart attack or stroke."

Measles Booster Vaccinations Necessary for Adults?

With additional cases of measles being diagnosed throughout the United States, some adults are questioning whether measles booster vaccinations are necessary. "Any person who has documentation of receiving the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccination series as a child or adult, has had titres [blood test] drawn to document immunity, or if born before 1957, does not need to get another MMR vaccination," says Alexia Gillen, D.O., of Regional Urgent Care in Rapid City, S.D.

Lead-Deadwood Regional Hospital Physical Therapist Holly Boehnke, PT, DPT, OCS, recently obtained certification as Orthopedic Clinical Specialist. Specialization is the process by which a physical therapist builds on a broad base of professional education and practice to develop clinical skills and knowledge in a particular area of practice. In order to qualify to apply for orthopedic certification, a therapist must submit evidence of a minimum of 2,000 hours of direct patient care in the area of orthopedics.
