World Cup Increases Discussion of Sports-Related Concussions

When United States soccer captain Clint Dempsey took a shin to the face in the recent World Cup game against Ghana, he spent some time on the bench. Some announcers and viewers wondered if he perhaps suffered more than a broken nose. Might Dempsey have incurred a concussion as well? Jason L. Knudson, M.D., of Queen City Regional Medical Clinic, in Spearfish, S.D., says it is good the World Cup and other professional sports are increasing public awareness about concussions. Concussions can be serious and also frequently occur in non-professional athletes throughout the country. For example, the certified family medicine physician says high school athletes have a nearly 20 percent risk of incurring a concussion during their high school career.

Know the Facts about STDs and Protect Yourself

According to a recent South Dakota Department of Health infectious disease summary, the number of sexually transmitted disease cases in the state continue to rise. Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) with increases from a year ago include chlamydia, 20 percent increase; gonorrhea, up by 38 percent; and syphilis, greater than 1,000 percent increase. "Sexually transmitted diseases are a significant concern and can have long-term health implications," says Joy Falkenburg, M.D., with Custer Clinic, a department of Custer Regional Hospital in Custer, S.D. "It really comes down to if you are responsible enough to have sex, then you need to be tested for STDs, and you need to ask your partner, or partners, to be tested if you aren't in a mutually monogamous relationship."
