May is National Osteoporosis Prevention Month
An estimated 10 million Americans are living each day with osteoporosis. Over time, their bones have become weak, putting them at higher risk for fractures and fracture-related health complications. Osteoporosis can strike regardless of age, gender, ethnicity or family history, but there are groups at higher risk, including women over age 65 and men over age 70.

While many risk factors are out of our control, there are lifestyle choices you can make to lessen the risk for developing osteoporosis, such as getting enough calcium, not smoking and limiting alcohol intake.

While prevention is important, as we age, our bones will naturally lose density, putting us at greater risk for bone fractures. To help combat that risk, Regional Health offers bone mineral density, or DEXA, screening in Rapid City, Spearfish, Sturgis, Lead-Deadwood and Custer. Bone density screening is a non-invasive, painless test that uses a machine to measure bone density in the spine, hip or forearm to determine the presence of osteoporosis.

In accordance with guidelines set forth by the National Osteoporosis Foundation, Regional Health recommends that all women over 65 and all men over 70 undergo a bone mineral density test.

To determine if a bone density screening is appropriate for you, we encourage you to first speak with your doctor. He or she can then help to schedule an appointment for the screening at the most convenient location.

For more information about osteoporosis, including safety tips for preventing falls, please visit the National Osteoporosis Foundation website, www.nof.org. Help fight osteoporosis and schedule your screening today at any of the following facilities:
