Labor and Delivery

At the Hospital

When you arrive at Rapid City Regional Hospital, you should check in at the Emergency Department (view map and directions). Please take time to familiarize yourself with the Emergency Department (Emergency Room) entrance and parking before your big day arrives.

Once you check in at the Emergency Department, they will admit you and enter the necessary information into the computer. The ED staff who admits you will call the labor room and inform them of your arrival. You will then be escorted to the labor room. At the labor room (one pictured at right), you will be assigned a nurse and will undergo a complete assessment.

Assessments include:
  • Being placed on a fetal monitor
  • Notifying the physician
  • Obtaining orders for care which can include an IV, medications, and tests deemed necessary
After a vaginal delivery, you will be moved to a room in the post-partum unit.
After a cesarean section, you will be recovered by your labor and delivery nurse and then transferred to post-partum care.
