Hospice
Volunteer Opportunities
When one is with a hospice patient, the activities which take place are often less important than the mere fact that someone is offering companionship to a person who might otherwise become lonely or withdrawn. The visit may be the single most important event in that patient or family member's day. Whatever the service, the focus of the volunteer is to enhance life, to make the time remaining as rich as possible for all concerned.
Each year, hospice volunteers provide more than 7,000 hours of help for the Hospice of the Hills team and the families they serve. Working and retired citizens in Rapid City, Black Hawk, Hot Springs, Custer, Edgemont, Hermosa, Wall, New Underwood, Hill City, Keystone and parts between are needed to help when they can.
The hospice volunteer is someone to be there for patients and families. We also have volunteers who provide clerical and office support for the hospice program. Volunteer activities are as varied as the needs and abilities of the people involved. The primary duty of the volunteer is to provide practical help with caring, warmth and understanding.
