FAQs
  • Do I have to make an appointment for a blood draw? No, appointments are not necessary because we have staff available 24/7 to assist patients. Please see hours (above) for instructions.
  • What is considered fasting? Fasting is going with out food or drink for 12 hours. Water is permitted during this time.
  • Do I have to bring anything with me when I have labs drawn?
Yes, Patient has to have identification (picture ID), doctor's orders and insurance information. The doctor's order must include the patient name, date of birth, physician signature, date and time that the order was written and the test to be performed.
  • Can I order blood work on myself? No. All laboratory tests performed at SPRH must be accompanied by an order from your physician's office.
  • Where are the tests performed? Most of the testing is done right here at the SPRH Lab. Rapid City Regional Hospital and Mayo Clinic also perform a small amount of the testing.
  • How do I find out more information about the tests my physician ordered? A website that we would recommend for further explanations about laboratory tests is www.labtestsonline.org.
  • When will the results be finished? Availability of the lab results will vary depending on the type of test. Most results will be available the next day.
  • How do I get the test results? Once the results are completed they will be available to your provider.
  • I don't understand my bill. Who do I contact for help? If you have questions about your bill please call the RCRH Billing Department at 605-719-7863.
  • How can I be sure that my lab results are accurate? In order for a patient's lab results to be valuable to their physician the results must be accurate. We have specific procedures in place for every aspect of collection and testing. Results are monitored using extensive quality control programs. Governmental and private organizations routinely inspect our laboratories. Accreditation and licensure of the SPRH Laboratory is dependent on favorable outcomes from these visits. All of the staff in the laboratory are highly trained professionals that are required to maintain their professional certifications and they routinely participate in continuing education programs.
  • What do I do with a sample that I have collected at home? When you have been instructed to collect urine, stool, or other samples at home please be sure that the sample is labeled with the following information: Patient's full legal name, Patient's date of birth, Collection date, Collection time. NOTE:A physician's order is needed to perform the testing.
Once the sample has been labeled and collected please bring the sample to the hospital. If you will be delivering the sample to SPRH for Laboratory testing between the hours of 6 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Monday through Friday please report to the front registration desk to be registered for the lab work. If you will be delivering the sample on weekends or after 5 p.m. please report to the ER window and let the ER staff know that you are here for lab work.
