Control, support lead to OPTIFAST success

Carol unintentionally added excess weight in the year after she recovered from a serious health issue.
The health issue had been a struggle she had overcome so for her it was time to relax and celebrate.
She did just that. And nearly a year later, she was unhappy with what she was seeing.
"Little things just got to be out of control as far as my own eating habits," she said.
The little things had added up. Carol found herself 40 pounds heavier than she was just a year earlier. The search for a diet plan, she said, was under way.
Thanks to the recommendation of friends and her own research, Carol settled on the OPTIFAST program of Regional Weight Management at Rapid City Regional Hospital.
"I wanted to be healthy, I wanted to feel better and I knew this was something I did have control over and that's what led me to the interest in this program."
Carol has already met her goal of losing 40 pounds. Her activity level has increased and her healthy habits are contributing to a weight loss balance, she said.

About OPTIFAST
The OPTIFAST Program is a portion-controlled, calorically precise, nutritionally complete diet supplied through meal replacements such as shakes, soups and bars. The program is in phases transitioning from only OPTIFAST products to the patient preparing his or her own meals.
Patients consume only the Optifast meal replacements during the Active Weight Loss Phase of 12 weeks. Patient may report an increase in energy, more stable blood sugar levels, decreased weight, and increased activity level after just one week. Following the Active Weight Loss Phase is a 6 week Transition Phase in which the patient gradually adds self-prepared foods back into their diet. Patients then move to a long-term Weight Management Phase of 34 weeks with fruits, vegetables, grains and low-fat proteins. During the program you will learn ways to include small amounts of your favorite foods into your new healthy lifestyle.

Back in control
After feeling out of control with her illness and the eating that took place in the following year, for Carol the program provided the structure and support she needed to successfully lose the weight and learn the skills to keep it off.
"It was a vacation from thinking about food. There was no planning involved with it," she said of the 12-weeks of the program. "It was 'these are the foods you're given on any given day.'"
While Carol will be leaving Regional Weight Management's OPTIFAST program soon, she said she's taking with her the tools she needs to maintain the healthy lifestyle.
"The discipline has to remain and the strength of this program is everything that has been provided in meetings," she said.
